About Higher Ed AI Playbook

The Higher Ed AI Playbook is a weekly newsletter for provosts, deans, presidents, and the academic leaders who are running the AI strategy for their institutions, whether or not it’s officially in their job description.

It’s written by Dr. Aviva Legatt: Founder of EdGenerative, Affiliated Faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Forbes Contributor covering the intersection of education, AI, and leadership. Aviva advises university boards, presidents, and systems on AI governance, adoption strategy, and microcredentials, and curates the open-access AI Use Cases in Higher Education: A Community Handbook — the resource behind this newsletter.

Each issue takes one actual institutional AI question — workforce alignment, microcredential governance, faculty AI literacy, the new accountability rules, and walks through what’s working, what isn’t, and what to do this week. The conversation focuses on both the successes and the challenges of the tools your colleagues are using and building. And in case you’re wondering, there are no sales or vendor pitches.

  • Monthly Use Case Lab — a live working session on Substack walking through one real institutional AI deployment in depth, the way the handbook is structured: governance, data flow, decision rights, and where institutions tend to get stuck.

  • Governance briefings — a focused written briefing on the policy, regulatory, and accreditation moves higher-ed leaders need on their radar (Workforce Pell, AHEAD rulemaking, state AI frameworks, NIST AI RMF updates).

  • Policy and guideline starter documents for internal committees at institutions of higher education
